- General Updates
Alan Laub introduced Abby Zubov, the Director of Internal Audit. Abby has been appointed as a member of the AdC3.
John Bruno introduced Randy Moory, who will serve as the Policy Analyst, a new position in the Vice Provost's Office. Randy comes from the Teale Data Center in Sacramento. He will provide support to John Bruno and both Computing Coordinating Councils.
John Bruno announced the proposal for the formation of the UC Davis Technology Infrastructure Forum. He announced this proposal at the Council of Deans and Vice Chancellors on March 28 (Memo from John Bruno to CODVC dated March 28,2000 distributed at the meeting). The Forum is an ongoing campuswide committee that will provide a mechanism for centralized coordination of the campus information technology infrastructure. Through representation from each college/school and administrative unit, the Forum will serve to engage the UC Davis technical community and promote institutional participation in information technology discussions of major campuswide importance (with a particular emphasis on middleware issues). This Forum will be an important component of the UC Davis Information Technology Coordinating Framework, which already includes the Academic and Administrative Computing Coordinating Councils, the Network Operations Advisory Committee, and the Information Technology Policy Board. John will soon send a call for nominees to the Forum.
John Bruno explained that the Office of the Vice Provost will focus on two main functions:
1) campuswide information technology policy and planning, and 2) the delivery of services through the Division of Information Technology. A Web site describing these functions is under development. (It will be located at http://vpiet.ucdavis.edu/.)

The objective of the project is to eliminate use of SSN as the student, faculty, and staff primary identification number.
Question from the floor: Will the same ID be used between the Payroll/ Personnel System and the Banner System? Answer: No.
Question from the floor: Will the change include the professional schools? Answer: Yes.
- Data Warehouse Project - Mary Jo Anderson, Herbert Diaz-Flores, Ray Reveles, Sandra Stewart
Handouts:
- Memo to Provost Grey, dated January 31, 2000, regarding Evaluation of the UC Davis Data Administration Pilot Project and Proposal for Permanent Status
- Data Administration: from Pilot to Core Function dated April 3, 2000
A demo of the pilot data warehouse was given and explored undergraduate applicant trends for 1993-1999.
Question from the floor: Is it a fair characterization that this project is strategic? Answer: Yes.
Question from the floor: Now that the pilot is reaching the end, has outsourcing or contracting for the rest of the data warehouse been considered? Answer: No.
Question from the floor: Should funding come from units who benefit from the warehouse? Answer: Yes, this model could be considered. With decentralized funding, and one unit providing the service, units could take advantage of an existing unit which is expert in delivering the service, and could realize an overall cost savings.
Question from the floor: Can Planning and Budget make the case that this effort will ultimately save money? Answer: One of the arguments in favor of this effort is the amount of time currently spent putting this type of data together manually. However, no cost/savings analysis has been performed.
Question from the floor: Will access to this data increase the possibility of data being used to the detriment of other departments - could data be manipulated to justify funding of one effort over another - given the campus's limited resources? Answer: Possibly.
